The Practical Life

Practical guides for a home that grows some of its own food, catches its own water, and makes room for rest.

Modern life often feels like an exhausting race. Between the rising cost of food, worries about water, and the constant demands on our energy, many people have lost the quiet confidence of being capable. The Law of Life Charitable Trust offers a different path: a way of living that is intentional, more self-sufficient, and restorative. We call this “The Practical Life.”

This is not a list of rules. It draws together timeless practical and spiritual wisdom to help you recover your vitality and independence. By living in step with unchanging natural laws, you move from the chaos of consumption to the peace of production. “The Practical Life” offers the practical skills to build a resilient foundation for your home, your family and your community.

Our Purpose:The Pathway of Restoration

The purpose of The Practical Life is to guide everyday people along a Pathway of Restoration. We believe true wellness is not just the absence of disease; it is the presence of vitality in every part of life: body, mind and spirit.

Our aim is to give you useful, practical information you can put to work straight away, whatever your age, your budget or the size of your section.

The four guides sit beside the eight principles of health the trust teaches. Growing food, catching rain, getting out into the fresh air and cooking simple meals are those principles put to work at home.

The eight principles of health

“Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power—these are the true remedies.”

Ellen G. White, The Ministry of Healing, page 127

Where to begin

You do not need land, money or special skills to start. A pot of herbs on a sunny windowsill, a bucket under a downpipe for watering the garden, a walk in the fresh air after dinner, a simple meal cooked from fresh vegetables: each is a first step on the Pathway of Restoration.

Pick one guide and try one thing from it this week. When it has become a habit, add another. Small steps, kept up, are how a garden grows, and how a way of life changes too.

“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”

3 John 1:2 (KJV)
